DME(Distance Measuring Equipment), It consists of an airborne interrogator and a ground transponder. Its working principle is: the airborne rangefinder transmits a pair of interrogation pulse signals, and the ground beacon station generates a corresponding response pulse signal and transmits it at different frequencies after receiving the interrogation signal. After receiving the ground RF pulse signal, the airborne rangefinder can calculate the distance between the aircraft and the ground rangefinder station based on the time delay between the interrogation pulse and the response pulse.


DME measures diagonal distance rather than horizontal distance. When the aircraft's flight altitude is much smaller than the slant distance to the control console, the slant distance measured by the DME can be regarded as the horizontal distance from the aircraft to the control console. DME operates in the UHF band, frequency range: 962-1213 MHz. The effective coverage range of DME is 200NM. Within the effective coverage range, the system's ranging error is no more than 0.5NM. ICAO stipulates that DME can provide distance information for up to 100 aircraft.

Ranges up to 389 nautical miles (within visual range), ground speeds up to 999 knots and time-to-station times up to 99 minutes are digitally calculated and displayed simultaneously on the KDI 574 panel display. Lock-on range is almost instantaneous (typically within one second), and accurate land speed and time-to-station readings are obtained in less than a minute.


Advanced technology has reduced the size and cost of such remote DME systems.
